There’s some respite in the stormy weather… even so, near where I used to live, they are suffering terribly from some of the worst flooding since records began and there’s now a big scandal over the agencies who were warned by locals about our Government’s penny pinching ways over dredging man made rivers designed to help alleviate possible flooding risks… The Somerset Levels are BELOW sea level in many places, it goes back to Roman times reclaiming the land with man made rivers and high banks taking water away…. however,  if you don’t dredge the rivers then whatever you pump out into them (when there’s heavy rainfall) in times like this, at high tides, means you are just moving the water around.

soapboxFor something that would have cost less than a £1M… losses and claims and damage to local economy is in the dozens of millions and rising… some people only just reclaimed their houses and less than a month or 2 later are being flooded out again… can you imagine that??? … and that’s one small area. My city and half of the south west of England are now completely cut off if you wish to use the railways… further flooding and land slides, washed away tracks on all 3 major routes means our economy down here suffers and that is estimated in the 100’s of millions long term! I am extremely pissed off with our Government and the shitty agencies that are dealing with this and the continued dis-investment as they just haven’t listened to the locals who KNOW what is happening or is likely to happen when unfortunate events like this happen. So I say STOP our overseas aid, help our beleaguered countrymen FIRST and anything left over, continue with the world wide philanthropy… OK, rant over!
